Community Outreach
A core part of CCM’s mission is to provide outreach to the greater Charlotte community. We are actively seeking new ways to carry mindfulness into the community where people are otherwise unlikely to have easy access. In the past, we have taught in a Latino health clinic as well as an afterschool program that works with youth in challenging situations. Currently, we have a weekly mindfulness program for women in the Mecklenburg County Jail, a Mindful Teacher Training Diversity Project to train teachers of diverse backgrounds who might not otherwise get high quality mindfulness teacher training due to financial barriers, and two separate Youth Outreach Programs which include school based mindfulness. Please see below for more details.

Women’s Mindfulness Project at Mecklenburg County Jail
CCM offers a 7-week mindfulness class as part of the women’s programing at the Mecklenburg County Jail. The classes are on-going, meaning as soon as one cycle ends, the next begins. In the once a week class, we practice mindfulness meditation and explore multiple mindfulness-based life skills for managing stress in healthy ways and making wise, kind, self care based choices in life—even in some of the most challenging situations.
Up to 15 women can take the class at a time, and when space is available, many women have chosen to return a second time, or even multiple times, opting in as often as possible.

Mindful Teacher Training Diversity Project
Mindfulness teacher training done well is life-transforming for the teacher while also benefiting those who come into contact with the teacher. Because mindfulness teacher training is expensive, many people who would otherwise become skilled mindfulness teachers face an unfair barrier. At CCM, we believe that financial barriers wrongly hinder access to quality mindfulness teacher training, particularly for people of diverse backgrounds. This limits the availability of culturally-appropriate mindfulness training in our society.
Therefore, we have started a Mindfulness Teacher Training Diversity Project that works to bring down this divide of access for people of diverse backgrounds who have: 1) a solid mindfulness practice and have shown a deep commitment to ongoing work, 2) a readiness to take the next step in teaching others, and 3) a financial barrier for obtaining high quality mindfulness teacher training.
Our approach asks a potential teacher trainee to pay as much toward their teacher training as is possible and right for them, and we find the means to support the rest. In this way, the trainee has an investment and commitment in their own process and contributes to our being able to support as many potential teacher trainees as possible.
Our first recipient will be participating in The Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program, a 2-year teacher training program with Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach. CCM will nominate additional candidates as funding is available.

Youth Outreach
At Charlotte Center for Mindfulness, we believe that mindfulness offers essential life skills that should be available to everyone, especially at an early age. Therefore as part of our core mission, we seek ways of offering mindfulness training for youth.
We have a new Youth Mindfulness Drop-in Group. We have worked in a variety of school settings over the years as well.
Please help us grow this outreach work so more of our young people can gain access to these vital life skills.
